COMSQUARED SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF UNISEARCH® 8.1 WITH UDO TECHNOLOGY

ATLANTA, GA.-- January 21, 2005 -- Comsquared Systems, the leader in document workflow and imaging solutions, announced today the availability of UNISearch® version 8.1. This newest version of the UNISearch product line delivers many product enhancements, including additional web services, improved document search capabilities and content storage enhancements.

New in UNISearch 8.1 is support for Plasmon’s UDO (Ultra Density Optical) drive technology. UDO drive technology offers optical storage users 30 GB of data storage per 5.25-inch form factor media, three times the capacity of earlier generation magneto-optical systems. UDO provides secure Write Once technology and long-term media life coupled with fast access to data, characteristics important for customers with rapidly growing archives and requirements for extended data retention.

UNISearch uses WORM (write once, read many) optical disks for permanent, non-erasable storage of content and re-writeable optical where re-usable optical disk media is allowed. Compliance applications require WORM media. For example, SEC requirements typically specify a media that cannot be changed, so WORM is used. Other applications allow re-writeable media.

Database indexes and content with a high access probability are stored in an online state. This online strategy provides instantaneous access to content and metadata. Some configurations also use near-line and off-line storage strategies to provide lower cost archiving of content as it ages and its probability of access becomes less. Content is written to the secondary media early in its life-cycle to provide a backup copy. At a configurable point in the life-cycle, the online copy is erased and future access will come from the secondary media source. UNISearch provides automated hierarchical storage management for these functions and controls the loading and unloading of optical disks based on requests to record and view content.

”We are pleased to add Plasmon to our list of certified quality UNISearch partners”, stated Tom Hintz, VP of Development. “Plasmon’s UDO innovations complement and further strengthen UNISearch document compliance and workflow automation offerings through increased capacities, performance, and security. Customers looking for durable, cost-effective, long-term archival storage will find UNISearch UDO an attractive alternative.”

Optical is available in two formats: magneto optical (MO) and ultra dense optical (UDO) also known as “blue laser technology.” Both formats have both WORM and re-writable options available, but MO uses hardware to prevent WORM media from being altered. UDO uses a field-proven and highly stable Phase Change recording technology with a media life of 50+ years for the secure, long-term storage of information.

Optical disks are recommended technology for long retention requirements due to their durability, and for medium to high access applications as well as applications with medium to high volume document storage. Optical has faster read and write speeds than comparable CD or DVD and requires fewer time consuming disk retrieval swaps, because optical has many times the capacity per media than the largest capacity DVD format.
